For those of you that know me, you probably know the story. For those of you that don’t, my name is Kim and I am 37 years old and have been battling lupus for a long time. Life with lupus is a daily battle that goes far beyond fatigue or pain. I was formally diagnosed in 2011 after years of being sick with what felt like a mystery illness. Since then, I’ve learned there is no cure—only medications that help me manage. Right now, I’m on a low dose of chemotherapy along with many other medications just to keep things under control.

This disease has not only brought the challenges of an autoimmune condition, but also severe side effects like extreme nausea and fatigue, muscle soreness, frequent infections, seizures, and repeated hospitalizations. Because of the seizures, I’ve lost my ability to drive, which has taken away a huge part of my independence. Everyday tasks that most people take for granted such as cooking, cleaning, even running errands can quickly become overwhelming or impossible. I’ve always loved being crafty and artistic, but lupus has taken a real toll on what I’m able to do both physically and mentally.

To make things harder, I was recently laid off in a company-wide reduction. Losing that steady income while facing crushing medical costs has been devastating. COBRA and private insurance premiums are outrageously expensive, and on top of that come the deductibles, copays, treatments, and medications—costs that are unavoidable, but unsustainable on my own.

I don’t like to ask for help—it’s never been easy for me—but right now, I simply can’t do this alone. Your support will go directly toward:
