Help Support Katie and Izzy Nero

Katie is a single mom who has double diabetes. This means she has characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. While she has insulin deficiency, she also has a resistance to insulin. She also has Grave's Disease and Neuropathy in her feet, which is worsening.
Katie is our favorite substitute teacher in the Special Ed classrooms at our school. She also works on the testing team whenever system wide testing is administered in the Trussville City Schools.
Recently, things have become a lot more challenging for Katie. During the second semester, Katie's health issues became worse. And even though her sugars were being monitored through sensors, they were not stable. She recently was transported by EMTs to the free standing ER and from there transported by ambulance to the intensive care unit at Grandview Medical Center. She was in Diabetic Keto Acidosis, which is a serious situation. She was there for 3 days.
After she returned home, though out of immediate danger, she was still struggling. Over 2 months later, her doctors are remotely monitoring her 24//7, trying to regain the perfect balance needed. Extreme high and low sugars make her unable to function properly. She cannot drive or work when they are at extremes. Needless to say her income was basically cut off for weeks. And now school is out for the summer.
To add to the stress of this, her rent is being almost doubled in July. Her daughter is so worried about her mom's health and now she is very upset at the possibility they might be forced to move, and she will be uprooted from her school and support system. She has 2 more years until graduation at Hewitt Trussville High School. She is very involved in the theater department as well as a member of the Bowling Team. Her friends that have been with her since pre-school are all at HTHS.
The stress and strain of a move would be so difficult and would no doubt affect her health. We don't want to lose Katie at our schools. She generously volunteers her time at the high school with the theater department and the bowling team. She always made sure no one missed a meal, or had to perform thirsty. In addition, she is wonderful with our Special Ed kids. She has a degree in Special Ed and a Master's in Early Childhood Education, and you cannot replace the love she shows our kids. We love our Mama Nero!
Please help us help her through this difficult time. All donations will go to:
Any open medical bills left from the ER and ICU
New upgraded sensors for monitoring her sugars
Help for making up for loss of income for work days lost
Help to offset increase in rent for several months
