The past week has been one of the toughest Kacie has ever gone through. It all began the week of August 19th when she woke up complaining of her hands and and feet hurting her, which then followed with numbness and tingling. She went to her doctor and was tested for Lyme's Disease on Thursday August, 22. The test came back negative, leaving us with no answers. As the days went on, Kacie kept getting worse. She suddenly had a difficult time walking properly, and was not able to sleep. Fast forward a week, where she had a follow up appointment on August 26th. Immediately, she was sent over to Lehigh Valley Hospital Pocono since she had gotten significantly worse in 4 days time. Kacie spent two days at Lehigh Valley Pocono, in their ICU after being diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome.
Guillian Barre Syndrome is a rare disorder that causes the immune system to attack one's nerves. This disorder has no cure, only a treatment in which the person receives antibody infusions to fight off the "toxic" ones. These infusions allow, over time, for the body to return back to "normal".
After spending two days in the ICU at Pocono, Kacie's doctors decided that the best course of action for her was to be transferred to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest via critical transport to be admitted into their Neurological ICU, as they believed she was starting to decline.
This has been where she has been since Wednesday August, 28. Kacie has been receiving the antibody infusions every day, for 18 hours a day. She has not been able to sleep, walk, or eat. She has needed assistance from her nurses to stand and pivot- which takes every bit of energy out of her that she has. She cannot grip anything with her hands and has developed a facial droop and cannot do anything by herself. There are moments where she gets little spurts of energy, but even those don't last long. She is in constant pain and the slightest touch makes her scream in agony. My mom has been at the hospital with her 24/7, making sure Kacie gets everything she needs.
Through such a difficult time, my family and I are asking for help. Of course, this is not what we want to do but unfortunately have no other choice. My mom has had to take a emergency leave from work, and my dad has been forced to look for a new job- leaving them right now with no income, and no insurance.
I wanted to start this fundraiser to try and lift their shoulders some. Kacie is going to need extensive inpatient physical therapy, and then more outpatient physical therapy at a rehab facility after being discharged from the hospital, along with occupational and speech therapies.
At this point in time, we do not know how long she is going to be in the hospital. If you could please donate, my family and I will be forever thankful.
Today, August 31st, we were told that she may be moved out of the Neuro ICU to the Physical Therapy floor! This has been the biggest news we have gotten so far and hope that this helps her get in good spirits.
