My sister just turned 40 three weeks ago. She was healthy, things were normal. She is a mom of two boys; Ben who is 18 & Jayden who is 8. She has been a labor and delivery nurse for the last 9 years spending her nights caring for others, and her days homeschooling Jayden. A week later that all suddenly changed.

On the night of January 4 she was seen in the emergency room for excessive bleeding, started on medication to control the bleeding, and labs and tests were done to determine the source. A few short days later a definitive diagnosis of Acute Premyelocytic Leukemia (APL) was delivered. Treatment for APL is intense, with at least a one month inpatient hospital stay, followed by an estimated additional six months of treatment after that. Fortunately, this type of cancer typically has great outcomes and a low chance of reoccurring after treatment is completed. That said, there is a very long road to recovery in front of my sister and her family.

The world doesn’t stop when you get sick. Cancer doesn’t care about your mortgage or your kids being fed or your lights staying on or your medical bills. If we’re being optimistic and everything with treatment goes absolutely FLAWLESS and the follow up bone marrow biopsy results show success of the treatment, Jess is looking at HOPEFULLY being back to work by July at the very EARLIEST.

The stress and exhaustion of battling cancer is enough already. If we can take the financial burden off her shoulders, I see it helping tremendously so she can focus on her health.
