While at work on the morning of June 19, 2019, Jasmin was developing a cough which continued to get worse as the day went on. A concerned coworker encouraged her to go to the Emergency Room. Jasmin was admitted for symptoms pertaining to dehydration. At the time she was also six and a half months pregnant with her daughter Laila. A routine chest x-ray showed a mass on the outside of her lung. She had a biopsy and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on June 29, 2019. Jasmine has endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy while pregnant. By July 11, she was rushed to the hospital with sepsis and Pre-eclampsia. Her daughter Laila was born prematurely on July 13, 2019, weighing only one pound and nine ounces.
Following the delivery via cesarean section, Jasmin was placed into a drug-induced coma for two days, and she would not get to see her daughter for another 10 days. As Jasmin battled her cancer and side effects, her baby girl remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until Oct 1, 2019, when she was welcomed home weighing five pounds two ounces. While battling her cancer and adjusting to being a new mom, Jasmin was hit with another blow as she was informed the cancer had progressed to her breasts and her kidneys. Her story does not end there though. The March after she received her first stem cell transplant, she had a grand mal seizure and was taken to the hospital where she was informed the cancer had metastasized to a tumor on the right side of her brain.
She was admitted to Sloan-Kettering for treatment in July 2022. The current course of treatment was not working, and she began radiation treatments in October 2022. While radiation helped to shrink her tumor, it did not rid her of the cancerous cells. She is now a candidate for something known as the car T cell treatment. She began preparing for this treatment in November 2022, and is currently in the hospital after receiving the first phase and will continue to be hospitalized for the next two months while treatment continues. Her chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplants, which have not yielded success, have brought tremendous pain, both physical and emotional.
Her diagnosis and the resulting side effects have caused Jasmin to be unable to work and have understandably caused a financial strain on the family, compounded by navigating treatments and raising a daughter during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Her daughter Laila is growing into a strong, creative, smart young lady. More than anything, Laila loves her mom and is a joy to watch grow up. Through it all, Jasmin retains her strength, fierce sense of humor, and deep motherly love.
Despite all this, Jasmin was determined to go back to school, attending Nassau Community College. Unfortunately, due to her ongoing treatment, she was forced to drop out in September. She now has student loan debt on top of accumulating medical bills and everyday costs of living. She also hopes to get Laila enrolled in school, which will be an added monthly expense.
Jasmin and Laila have been through so much in their short lives already. Jasmine is currently back in the hospital, awaiting more treatment. Jasmin and Laila are family to many of us and friends to even more. The outpouring of support and generosity from those that love them has been unbelievable over the last few years. But now, they need us more than ever.
Any amount you can give, however big or small, will make a difference to them. And if you are unable to give, please include them in your prayers, intentions, or thoughts.
On behalf of Jasminn and Laila, as well as her mother Judy, and all her family, we thank you for your generous support during this time. Her mother Judy is taking care of managing the funds for Jasmine and will ensure your donations, prayers and well-wishes reach her.
