On October 18th Jamie's son Connor discovered a small nodule above his left eye. Upon taking him to their medical doctor and undergoing a CT scan and MRI they received the shocking news that Connor has a very large mass on the right frontal lobe of his brain. On October 31st Connor underwent a biopsy at University of Iowa hospitals. It was determined that Connor had a Grade II Diffuse Astrocytoma. Connor was then referred to the Mayo Clinic, on January 18th 95% of Connor's tumor was removed. This was after 2 craniotomies in one day which left Connor with temporary left-sided paralysis. The final diagnosis from the pathology report read Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma. On April 9th Connor started radiation and chemotherapy in Rochester, this will continue from 4/9-5/18. Throughout this entire process Jamie has remained grounded in her faith and managed to bring positivity and light with her to work. She is the sole provider for her family and has been left with incredible debt from several hospitals, including her own hospital stay in December for kidney stones. While she is covered under FMLA, this unfortunately does not give her a paycheck and she had run out of PTO months ago. She is currently working very little in order to remain with her son while he receives radiation and chemotherapy. Jamie describes her son as sweet, kind, and putting himself aside to take care of others. These attributes can also be said about Jamie herself. We are grateful to have her as part of our team on 7SE. As I write this I would like to share a bit from Jamie's own words "The thought of losing my beautiful son has been the most devastating experience of my life. I can only imagine what if must be like for him and others suffering from cancer. Throughout all of this, I have seen Connor display great strength and courage. He has an enduring, compassionate spirit and willingness to live. We will not give up hope. With God, all things are possible."
