This GoFundMe is on behalf of a wonderful family who are facing an incredibly challenging journey with their 4½ month old baby boy, James. After months of pushing for answers and not being taken seriously by medical staff, his parents, Ashlyn and Lewys, finally received James’ diagnosis, left unilateral craniosynostosis. This condition has caused the bones in his skull to fuse too early which is restricting critical brain growth. James now requires two major surgeries: the first to insert a brace to create space for his developing brain, and a second surgery a few months later to remove it. Ashlyn and Lewys have persisted in advocating for their child which is the reason he is now getting the care he needs from the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Between surgeries, Ashlyn and Lewys will be required to take James to Melbourne for weekly specialist check ups, where the medical team will monitor his progress. The diagnosis has created a heavy emotional and financial burden for the family, and they know there is still a long road ahead. Ashlyn and Lewys will be responsible not only for attending weekly appointments and preparing for two surgeries but also for managing important medical care at home every day. With Lewys stepping back from work to support his family during this time, the financial impact continues to grow through the costs of travel, accommodation, fuel, meals away from home, medical supplies and expenses, and everyday living expenses, alongside a reduced household income while Ashlyn is already on leave.
This fundraiser is a way for those who care about them and anyone moved by their story to offer support during a time when they shouldn’t have to worry about finances on top of everything else. Any contribution will help lighten the load as they focus entirely on his health and recovery.
