Help Support Education in Jinja Uganda

Hi I'm Emma, if you know me, you'll know I've now been to Uganda twice and the country as well as the people there hold a very special place in my heart. One of these amazing people is my friend DJ, who works as a builder with the charity I have volunteered with. He is the kindest man with a very big heart and always looks to help people in any way that he can.

Recently, DJ shared with me his desire to continue supporting a family that I also met whilst out in Uganda last year. A key part of this is helping their eldest daughter access secondary education, something that whilst it might not seem expensive to us, is often out of reach of many families in Uganda who survive on very little. Without this support, it is not unlikely that she will be married off at 16 years old.

The school this girl will be attending is called Victory High School, near the city of Jinja, and would cost £230 a year. Whilst I am already supporting this family with what I can, I thought I would set up this fundraiser to support their family or the daughter further, as well as extending support to other children in the area, such as at the Great Home of Hope Orphanage, which is supported by another friend of mine Fahad. I will also try to do some fundraising events, such as a car boot sale when I am back in the UK!!

The value placed on education in Uganda is incredible. I can't fully describe the desire for education and the joy that these children get from going to school. It is incredible to see, considering how easily an education can be taken for granted in the UK.

As an international development student at university, I recognise the complexities of aid, but one thing I have learnt is that helping people directly can have a far more significant impact. Helping one person in a family to receive a senior education could help to relieve this family from poverty.
