Help support Don’s fight against Multiple Myeloma

If you are from the North Shore of Kauai, then you probably know Don Schwartz. Don is the true definition of a waterman, a resident and boat captain of Kauai for over 40 years and respected throughout the community as a kind, generous man who always puts his friends and family first, above his own needs. He has always maintained his health through discipline and hard work. He strives to live a wellness-oriented lifestyle, which is why it is so shocking for us that he was diagnosed with stage two multiple myeloma.

About two months ago, Don was experiencing pain in his ribs, spine and pelvis area. It got to the point where he was barely able to walk and the pain was so severe he was rushed to the emergency room. They did several tests, showing he had four broken ribs and lesions in his ribs, spine and pelvis area. Don then flew to California to seek medical treatment at Stanford Medical Center. On arrival to Stanford Medical facility, he was admitted to the hospital for 8 days and went through a battery of tests. He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma that is attacking his bones. He was prescribed chemotherapy and radiation for six to twelve months.

Multiple Myeloma is a rare blood cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. In multiple myeloma cancerous blood cells build up in bone marrow where they crowd out the healthy blood cells and it can cause blood, bone, and tissue damage. There is no known cure, but there is treatment and a possibility of prolonged remission.

Not all of his expenditures will be covered by insurance while he is in California seeking treatment. If you know Don, then you know that he puts so much energy into everything he does, helping out family and friends, and never asking for anything in return. This is the biggest fight of his life and he needs the support of his family, friends and his community now more than ever!
We humbly ask for your love, prayer and support so that Don can focus on his healing and come home to be with his family and friends. All funds raised will go to his medical bills and his life expenses. Thank you in advance for your contributions. Your kindness means the world to us!
