UPDATE:
Dice went in for surgery this morning, Dec 5th. The vets found an accumulation of the sand clearing product Sand-Rid at his duodenum, which was preventing his stomach from draining. They were also able to find the source of internal bleeding and get it stopped. We are thrilled at this update! He will be awake in about an hour and will remain at Pilchuck for recovery.
Original:
On Saturday, December 2nd, Dice started showing signs of colic. His ever-attentive mama, Kate, was with him and was able to give him initial care. When he did not respond to Banamine and the other first steps she took, he was transported and admitted to Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital, where he is still being treated.
Once at Pilchuck, the vets found an excess of fluid in his stomach, and were unsure the cause. His colon was minimally displaced, but no enterolith or sand were found. Over the course of the first 24hrs, vets found bleeding from his spleen, and continued reflux in his gut. He was given antibiotics for the internal bleeding. Later on, more bleeding was found in his abdomen, and the reflux has continued to varying degrees. Many ultrasounds, scopes, and other tests later, and the vets are still uncertain the overall cause of the internal bleeding and reflux. He is currently receiving plasma treatment and blood clotters to try and get him stable enough for exploratory surgery.
If you have had the privilege of meeting Kate and Dice, you know first hand that they are an extremely special duo. Dice has sweetly helped Kate recover from her severe riding accident in 2019, and together the two have enjoyed miles of trails, winning rounds at horse shows, galloping on the beach, and endless snuggles in Dice’s stall. Kate and Dice are a bright light wherever they go, Kate encourages and shows love and kindness to everyone she meets, and Dice can often be found being an amazing support to nervous young horses (and riders!) at horse shows, or cuddling vets and farriers while being worked on.
While the vets continue to investigate, Dice’s vet bills are increasing daily. In order to take a portion of the burden off of Kate and her family, please consider donating any amount that is accessible to you.
