On the morning of July 13, 2025, my brother Deven was in a serious car accident on his way to work. He fell asleep at the wheel, completely exhausted, on his way to earn overtime to help with school shopping for his kids. He drifted off and woke up only after his car had already veered into the grass, ramped a large culvert, and the vehicle launched 15–20 feet into the air before slamming down on all four tires.

The airbags didn’t deploy, and the landing shattered one of his vertebrae. He had to undergo major spinal surgery, removing part of the bone to relieve pressure on his spinal cord, and placing rods and screws to stabilize his back. He’s now dealing with severe nerve pain down his left leg and is expected to need at least a year to fully recover.

He’s currently in inpatient rehab with a lot still up in the air regarding his timeline, but he’s been doing everything he can to rebuild strength before going home. Deven will need ongoing physical therapy to regain mobility and walk normally again. His income is gone for the foreseeable future, and his life partner, Tylana, will also need to take time off to care for him and their three children, who are 10, 9, and 5.
