Help Support Debra O'Neal and Family
Donation protected
In 2017 Debra O'Neal, married and a mother of three, was first diagnosed with aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is an autoimmune disease in which the body fails to produce blood cells in sufficient numbers. Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow by stem cells that reside there. Aplastic anaemia causes a deficiency of all blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. (from Wiki)
After treatment Debra was in remission, but unfortunately, in mid 2019 the aplastic anemia returned. Her doctors at John Hopkins Hospital have recommended that she receives a bone marrow transplant. When a donor is found, Debra and a caregiver will need to relocate to Baltimore for four consecutive months.
Currently waiting for a match at home, Debra is recovering from serious surgery. She developed a serious bowl obstruction and was admitted to Christiana Care on Oct. 10, moved to a nursing facility on Nov. 25 and is now doing the final leg of recovery at her home.
We have created this campaign to ask you to do two things. The first is to visit bethematch.org and find instructions on how to be a donor. Unfortunately, the number of African American donors is very low and any possibility is could have a life-changing impact. All it takes is a simple mouth swab or blood test.
The second is to help support Debra and the O'Neal family. Her medical expenses are enormous, has taken a significant salary reduction while being on disability, and she will need support while staying in Baltimore. While in Baltimore, Debra will need housing, meals, and medical copays, etc. throughout the duration of her stay. These funds will help with those needs.
Thank you,
Debra's Angels
