Our family never imagined we’d be here—reaching out to ask for help. But today, we are humbly sharing our story and asking for your support as our beloved father, David Strawn, fights to recover from a cascade of unexpected and devastating medical events.

What began as a routine surgery for a bowel obstruction quickly spiraled into a nightmare. On the day of surgery, Dad was diagnosed with double pneumonia caused by aspiration, and he tested positive for COVID-19. His oxygen levels plummeted, and he was placed in the ICU on a ventilator. Over the next two weeks, he endured repeated intubations, unable to breathe on his own.

Eventually, he stabilized enough to begin rehabilitation, but just two days in, he suffered a major setback and was rushed back to the ER. This time, the damage was worse. He required a tracheotomy, followed by weeks of intensive therapy and another hospital transfer.

A Life-Changing Stroke

Sometime during his hospital stay, Dad suffered a spinal cord stroke that left him paraplegic from the waist down. This heartbreaking development has forever changed his life and the path forward for our entire family. Adapting to this new reality has required major home modifications, specialized equipment, and round-the-clock care.

After two and a half grueling months, Dad finally made it home. As Mom learned to care for his trach, wounds, and physical therapy, we all hoped things would finally settle. But just two weeks later, Dad was rushed back to the hospital with sepsis from infected wounds. He underwent emergency debridement surgery and a colostomy to protect his healing process.

Now back in a rehabilitation hospital, Dad continues his fight every single day—with courage, grit, and determination.

These events have placed a tremendous financial strain on our family. Medical bills, home accessibility modifications, a wheelchair-accessible van, ceiling lifts, wound care supplies, and the cost of in-home medical support are just a few of the mounting expenses we’ve had to take on—all while navigating one crisis after another.
