3/16/23 Update:

Shortly after I wrote the words below, David passed. Here's what went out to our local grower's group this morning (thank you Kirsten).

Before you read the announcement, I understand the family appreciates your cash support. Share what you've got; help them as you can. Thank you.

I am very sad to report that David Morton passed away yesterday afternoon, about 3:45 pm.
David was unable to recover from the damage to his lungs, after being on support for some time. As you may be aware, David has been undergoing rigorous treatment for cancer.

There is no set plan for a memorial at this time, but there is an intention to arrange an outdoor memorial locally, at some time in the future. Please share this and any updates with those close to David who are not on this mailing list.

Please send support, condolences, and questions for the family to Jackie Mendoza, so that she can shoulder managing that for them as they need some time for themselves.

3/15/23 Update:

David's brother Jack asked me — Sue — to post this request.

If you still want to support David, funds to help cover his current affairs would be good and appreciated.

This is the very best way you can help. (He's not able to receive cards, meals, or flowers.)

Thank you.

[end of update, original post follows]

Hi. I'm Sue Kearney and I'm helping my friend David get through the next 75 days of aggressive treatment for lung cancer.

I'm happy to set this GoFundMe up with David as the beneficiary. Please know that every contribution — small or large — will be helpful.

A little about David: He's a committed, loving, and generous cultivator, teacher, and community activist. I met him when I joined a group of growers and medicine makers, and David has taught me a lot. He's visited my garden and showed me how to understand and respond to what's going on with my plants.

David's also helping build a butterfly garden in a community not far from here. He's got work still to do, plenty left to accomplish. He's 51 and he's not done yet. Or so we all hope.

The amount requested in this appeal is just the first phase; it'll cover the next 75 days. David's looking at two years of intense treatment. I'm looking forward to coming back and asking you again for his next phase of treatment. I'm sure you join me in that hope.

Do you know David? Has he helped you with your grow, as he has me? Has he taught you how to build your garden? Have you lost a loved one to cancer? Do you feel this in your heart? Please help.

David will be out of pocket at least $100/day, paying for complementary medicines and whole, organic foods to get him through.

David shared some details with me:
  • He's had radiation already, and has begun chemo. He's working with a local MD, and will be taking a specific mixture of alternative (not covered by insurance) medicine to support his immune system and keep him healthy during and between treatments, based on current research coming out of Israel. None of this is covered by insurance.
  • His organic, fresh-veg diet requires another cash outlay every day as well for juices and more.

You can contribute right here on GoFundMe or you can send a check (contact me for details). [Please note: I've heard that PayPal credit card may at first decline the contribution but then send a "check-back" email and text message with a link to ok the payment. So if your payment is declined, look for an email to approve the contribution.]
