About the film:
Hello, my name is Lyra Murphy and I am the writer and director of Iris. Iris is an exploration into familial trauma and the ripples that a tragic event can cause to a family.
Each character in the story represents a different response—how people cope in their own unique, often conflicting, ways. Dylan is avoidant and emotionally immature, Jane- his mom- is trying to move on, and Layla- the younger sister- mitigates the tension within the entire family.
I feel very passionately about these themes and characters, and I want to make this film because I think it’s a valuable story. Familial trauma is so common, but not commonly talked about. Grief and loss can deeply affect family dynamics, and as a storyteller I want to explore those affects, as I have experienced them along with so many others in our society. Dylan processes his emotions and interpersonal issues through his photography and uses this medium as a way to finally reconnect with what he’s lost.
Our crew is made up of Templeton Secondary Alum, as well as current Capilano University Film students. As Indie Filmmakers, we prioritize making authentic narratives that can be widely enjoyed and critically awarded. Ultimately, this film is not sad, but hopeful and emotional, telling a universal story that appeals to all generations.
Synopsis:
Dylan is a talented photography student struggling to connect with his family and face the emotional fallout of his father’s devastating accident. While readying the family house for sale, he discovers a box of his father’s old photographs — a quiet, powerful glimpse into the man he used to be. Through their shared love of photography, Dylan begins to process the pain his family never talks about. In creating something new, he finds a way back to the people he thought he’d lost.
