In the early hours of Tuesday morning, our world turned upside down. At just four weeks old, our son Colin became suddenly very ill, and we rushed him to the ER at 2 a.m. As soon as we arrived, the medical team immediately began working on him. His heart rate was an alarming 317 bpm, and he was in SVT (supraventricular tachycardia).

Doctors acted quickly — they gave him emergency medication, shocked his heart twice, then intubated him and placed him on a ventilator. After further testing, they discovered that Colin was likely born with an extra electrical pathway in his heart. This condition damaged his left ventricle and left him incredibly vulnerable.

While in the ICU, Colin suffered another terrifying episode where his heart dropped rapidly, and once again, the doctors had to step in with emergency medication to save him. After this event, Colin also began having tremors in his arms and legs that grew progressively worse, which required the pediatric neurology team to become involved in his care alongside cardiology and intensive care.

Thanks to the incredible team at CHKD, Colin has been extubated and is now on heart medications. He will continue his recovery journey at home, but it won’t be simple. Colin will need:

    •    Medical equipment to monitor his heart daily

    •    Heart medications

    •    Frequent visits to his cardiologist to track his progress and see if his heart can heal itself

    •    Ongoing neurological monitoring to evaluate his tremors

    •    A procedure under anesthesia around 9 months old, where doctors will study his heart closely and determine whether Colin will need further intervention, such as surgery, to repair the extra pathway

Unfortunately, the financial strain is overwhelming. Insurance covers some costs, but not all of the essential monitoring equipment, medications, procedures, and mounting hospital bills.
