HELP SUPPORT BRUCE THROUGH HIS CANCER JOURNEY

We are Bruce and Karyn Apps of Prince George. We have been married 35 years and have 3 sons and 3 grandsons.

Just a few months ago our lives took a drastic change. Bruce was diagnosed with Basa Cell Carcinoma cancer. The cancerous growth is located on his nose, and it needs to be removed immediately. Once the doctors can remove the cancer his recovery is going to require a minimum of 3 more surgeries to repair his nose. All of Bruce’s procedures will be required to take place at VGH in Vancouver. Prince George does not have the resources for this type of cancer surgery to remove the growth or complete the follow up surgeries.

On March 11, 2025, we were grateful to find out that the surgery is going to happen on March 31st. After the removal of the cancer Bruce is required to stay in Vancouver for a few days before travelling home. The purpose is to help to reduce the risk of infection. Six weeks following, so mid May, we will need to return to Vancouver for the first reconstruction surgery. Then they will monitor his recovery and healing and when the time is right another surgery will be required. Once all these procedures are completed and the healing is successful Bruce’s prognosis is very positive.

Bruce will not be able to work for at least 3 months. His trade is working with aluminum as he is a boat builder. Because of the aluminum filings that do float around in the air he is not able to work because this greatly increases his risk of infection.

Bruce is our sole financial provider. I, myself, suffer from numerous chronic medical conditions that prevent me from being able to work. I recently received a diagnosis of heart issues as well as stage 3 kidney disease which is very debilitating.

At this time, Bruce has begun the process for medical employment insurance and that will certainly help but will not relieve all the financial pressures we will be facing. There will be travel expenses in addition to covering our day-to-day home expenses. We will be doing our best under these circumstances to do what we can to meet these extraordinary challenges.
