Give Bea the Best Chance at Life
Beatrix was born in December 2023 at just 26 weeks, weighing only 887 grams. In her short life, she has already endured more than most people face in a lifetime. Diagnosed with severe Cerebral Palsy, chronic lung disease, microcephaly, cortical visual impairment, and severe dysphagia, Bea requires 24/7 care and daily therapy to give her the best possible start in life.
Her parents, Nick and Lucy, are doing an amazing job sharing the care of Bea whilst juggling work as teachers, but they are completely exhausted. As friends, we have followed Nick and Lucy’s very difficult journey over these past 22 months as they come to terms with Bea’s special needs and the challenges that are required to care for her each and every day.
Now, we’re turning to you to help ease their load and give Bea the critical support she needs.
What We're Fundraising For
- A larger family vehicle – approx. $45,000 -To accommodate a specially designed car seat and mobility equipment
- A hospital-grade electric bed – approx. $10,000 -Adjustable height and positioning with a pressure relieving mattress
- VitalStim intensive dysphagia therapy – approx. $4,500 -To help Bea’s oral motor skills and swallowing
While the NDIS covers some funding for care and therapies, and will fund some future modifications, it won’t cover the cost of the vehicle itself, or the bed that best suits Bea’s current needs. NDIS funding will only partially cover the cost of the swallowing therapy.
Brave Girl
Bea tries really hard each day to do the smallest things that most of us take for granted - grasping objects, sitting, swallowing. Bea’s intensive daily therapies work to increase her mobility, flexibility and muscle control. Despite a challenging prognosis, Bea continues to make progress - she is a determined, brave little girl (who loves to laugh).
Bea spent her first six months in Sydney hospitals undergoing treatment and stabilization. She has already had three surgeries, with a fourth planned later this year to insert a feeding peg into her stomach, replacing her current feeding tube.
Why Now?
Bea’s medical specialists have stressed that the first four years of life are crucial for brain development and motor function in children with Cerebral Palsy. Early and intensive intervention can help ‘re-wire’ the brain to support better long-term outcomes.
We hope that by concentrating our efforts on providing this financial support, with your help, Nick and Lucy will be able to focus their time and energy on Bea’s welfare and development.
Now is the time to give Bea her best chance.
