On November 3, 2018, my sister Barbara Peckham was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  This is the same illness we lost our dad to 11 months prior.  

Barbara went into this fight with the most positive attitude person can have.  Her faith is strong and this did not shake her.  She underwent intensive, in hospital chemotherapy first for 30 days and then for an additional 4 rounds.  She experienced c-diff, sepsis and a variety of other setback but she persisted and finished with a clean bone marrow test.  We praised God and were estatic as she began what was to be a year of oral chemo in April.  

Last month, one year after her initial diagnosis, we received the hard news that her leukemia has returned.  Barbara is now under the care of a specialist and will be undergoing a drug trial with a different form of chemo followed by a stem cell transplant.  She remains positive, strong and filled with faith.

While this is has been emotionally and physically draining, it has also taken a financial toll with her first round of medical bills being over $10,000.  This round will likely be similar and possibly more expensive as she will be doing a drug trial.  She will be treated in Seattle which also will require more travel and the stem cell transplant will require a caretaker following the transplant as she lives with her daughter who works graveyard shifts and sleeps during the day.
