Hello, my name is Gia Fierro. I’m reaching out to you on behalf of my dear friend Anne Troy, who is currently battling stage 4 cancer while also facing the hardships of homelessness.
Anne Troy is a woman veteran with an honorable discharge. She has been homeless since December 10, 2024. Anne is stage 4 with 3 kinds of cancer. She gets regular treatments at the Philadelphia VA Hospital. She can’t get there because she has no car. The DAV (Disabled American Veterans), has a free shuttle for rides to the VA. Unfortunately, it’s a volunteer position that is currently unfilled.
Anne applied for HUDvash (Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing), which usually takes several months to years to be approved. The VA has a program called SSVF (Supportive Services for Veterans and Families). They have a homeless hotline, which Anne expressed she must’ve called over 100 times. Out of those 100 times, only one hotline was of assistance in placing her in a hotel for one night. She is now devastated financially, calling all the numbers and getting no help is demoralizing and dehumanizing.
Anne has informed me that she’ll be sleeping at the Philly VA Saturday night. If she is not allowed to sleep in the lobby, she will be sleeping at the bus stop out front. (To my horror, she told me she has done this before.)
If you know Anne, you know she is the type of person that would do anything for you. Please donate to be sure that one of ours can sleep peacefully at night.
