We are the Conway family, not all by surname but linked through love, care and compassion especially through our love of dogs.
After a freak accident on Monday, we as a family, are left picking up the pieces to repair what is left of a family run business. A big part of our family are our dogs, wherever we go, they go. We don't have just one breed, we love them all, but right now they need our help and we can't do it all on our own.
A little bit about how we got here...
Unfortunately the incident meant that a large fire broke out and tore through several outbuildings, tragically one of those buildings were where the dogs were housed. William and Adam both ran into the burning buildings to rescue the dogs, without thought or hesitation. All of the dogs were recovered from the fire through nothing short of an act of bravery.
After being rescued, William and Adam did everything they could with help of friends and neighbours to save Alfie the red Labrador - the most loyal, brave, best friend to William. Sadly, he had succumbed to his injuries before he could reach the vets. He leaves a massive hole in Williams life, both as a pet and working dog, and the whole family are devastated to have lost him as well.
Red, the black Labrador, ran from the fire through instinct, or to search for Adam and William, we will never know. Red was missing for over 9 hours in the dark. An army of friends known to both Adam and William arrived to help with the efforts, as well as volunteers from Harvey's Army with thermal drones and scopes. Red was found after she had returned to the yard, cold and very scared a police man alerted the search parties. Red was taken to the vets where she was assessed and cared for over a 48 hour period. She received the best medical treatment, with specialists from up and down the country advising of what to do and how best to treat her.
Unfortunately, Red became very unwell late into Wednesday evening, her poor little body had started to give up, and the decision was made to let her cross to rainbow bridge and find Alfie.
Mali, the Belgian Malinois escaped the fire and was taken straight to the vets. She has been so brave, and through nothing short of a miracle she has been home since Monday evening. Mali has been treated for smoke inhalation, burns to her hind legs and has some damage to her beautiful ears. We are hopeful that she will make a full recovery from her injuries, her treatment is ongoing.
Reggie, the black spaniel. Where to start with Reggie? He is simply a joy, he has a zest for life not matched by any other dog. He cant sit still, he runs everywhere at 100mph, gives kisses as if they were breath, and is Williams right hand man for working hedgerows and low ground on the farm. But not right now...
After fighting against all the odds, he has survived. His injuries are nothing short of horrific, but still his little tail wiggles and his thieving ways have gained him more treats than he could ever dream of. Reggie has a treatment plan, which we are hopeful he will follow through and make a full recovery, after spending 4 days in the vets with the most attentive care, he was able to return home last night - and what a relief it was for him to be in his own bed with his little blue teddy bear.
It is nothing short of a miracle that Mali and Reggie have survived this ordeal, and rest assured absolutely everything was done to try and save Alfie and Red, but they were destined to be taken too soon. We are so thankful and forever in debt to William and Adam for going into the fire and speedy response of the fire service and police, without them this would be a very different story indeed.
Now for the hard bit...
We are normal people, all working normal jobs. But as expected the vet bills are rising. So many people have reached out over the last few days asking if they can help, if they can be of assistance. So many people have offered their time if needed, support with feeding animals and keeping the business running as normal whilst recovery takes place and there is a debt that can never be repaid for this.
We have had people approach but with no words, but they understand the difficult times that have unfolded this week. If you can help we would like to get on top of the dogs treatment bills. The vet bill in just 4 short days have mounted to quite a sum, and to allow William to rebuild his career, we would like to support him to pay some of these bills, ease the pressure mentally and physically, allowing everyone to focus on the future, rebuilding, recovering and remembering how special it is to have loved a four legged friend.
