My brother Alex needs our help. On December 27th, Alex went into the ER with shortness of breath and mild chest pain. Test after test - they couldn’t regulate his decreasing blood pressure, so they were admitting him to the hospital for observation. Shortly after midnight, Alex’s health quickly declined - he was sweating profusely and his blood pressure/heart rate decreased until his heart just stopped altogether. For 17 long minutes, the staff performed CPR to bring my brother back to life. Once resuscitated, they brought him back for emergency procedures to insert an impella device and Ecmo to help keep him alive. With no answers as to “why” at this point, they just knew Alex’s heart was failing. He was stable, but critical. As my mom got to the hospital, she was met by the staff from another hospital informing her that her son is critical and needed to be transferred to give him his best chance. As his healthcare proxy, she learned how sick her son truly was. His heart was failing, his kidneys were failing, and had no blood flow getting to his legs. Before the ambulance transfer to the new hospital, they corrected the blood flow to his legs to reduce the risk of losing them.

Since December 27th, Alex has been in the care of the amazing healthcare staff. At this time, he is being evaluated to determine if he is a candidate for an LVAD and a heart transplant.
