Dear Family, Friends, Friends of Friends and Supporters,

We are reaching out to you on behalf of a remarkable person in our lives. Carl is a father, spouse to Barbara, grandfather (Poppa C) and retired United States Air Force Veteran who proudly dedicated 25 years of service to our country. Carl is a gentle giant who entered our lives 15 years ago. He is a revered man who asks very little and gives more than he can to anyone in need.

Over the past 6 years, Carl has faced various medical obstacles, including two strokes that battered him physically, emotionally, and mentally. No matter how difficult or painful it got, he garnered the strength to get back on his feet to reclaim his life. With a new perspective on life, Carl grew an affinity for the outdoors with Barbara and relished riding his trek bike proudly representing his Grandpa/Veteran identity with his name “Poppa C” on the back of his leather vest and the American flag and Air Force wings in the front.

On November 4th, 2023, everything in Carl’s world and ours took an unprecedented turn. On that day, Carl got into a horrific accident while riding his trek bike in the rural parts of Sacramento, California. The bike crushed his body and he was airlifted to Shutter Hospital. In the hospital, the trauma unit discovered Carl had sustained punctured lungs, broken ribs, a broken spine, and fractures to his hip and legs.

While we remain hopeful he will regain sensation in his legs. Carl is paralyzed and has limited mobility due to upper body weakness. Carl is currently in the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California where the specialized spinal cord unit has informed us that Carl is making great strides to regain his strength but more importantly, Carl is finding joy in life once again.

Despite the progress he continues to make, the road to recovery is long and filled with obstacles. As we learn more about veteran resources, we are being told, Carl will be responsible for remodeling modifications to their home to make it Accessible Disability Approved. These are significant and costly modifications that can help with Carl’s quality of life and independence. As a result, we hope to galvanize financial support to mitigate the financial burden that weighs heavily on him and his family.

As someone who values strength and resilience, I understand that it can be difficult to ask for help, but I firmly believe that strength lies in our ability to recognize when we need support. That is why we are turning to our community for help. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful impact in Carl’s journey towards reclaiming independence and rebuilding Carl’s new life. Your generosity can provide the resources he needs to continue his rehabilitation and improve his quality of life. Let us rally together and show our support for this courageous veteran who has sacrificed so much for our country. Together, we can make a profound impact and give him the hope and
assistance he deserves.

Thank you for your kindness and compassion.

Sincerely,
Poppa C’s grandchildren and kids!
