Help Support a 103-Year-Old Veteran Fighting for His Life

Donation protected
We are humbly asking for your support to help care for our beloved patriarch Vincent H. Syphax, a 103-year-old U.S. veteran, who has spent his entire life serving his country, his family, and his community with strength, humility, and resilience. After spending 35 days fighting for his life at St. Helena Hospital in California, he has finally returned home—but the road ahead is long, difficult, and filled with medical needs and expenses that our family can no longer shoulder alone.

He may be 103, but he is not ready for hospice. He still wants to live—fully and with dignity—for however long he is blessed to remain with us.

For years, our family has fought—relentlessly—to secure the proper VA disability rating he is rightfully owed. We have submitted every document requested, attended countless appointments, responded to every inquiry, and followed every process. Yet, despite his severe health conditions and extensive service history, he still has not been granted the updated 100% disability rating that would provide the level of care he urgently needs.

It is heartbreaking to admit, but at times it feels as though they are waiting for him to pass so they will no longer have to update his rating.

My deepest hope is that he will receive the benefits he has earned before it is too late, so he can spend the rest of his life with the honor and dignity he deserves—and so that when his time comes, he can leave this world at peace, knowing that his wife of more than 65 years, Josephine, will not lose her home or quality of life because of his passing.

Why We Are Asking for Help

The gaps in care are enormous. The VA and state in-home health programs provide only a small fraction of what he needs. He currently requires approximately 25 additional hours of in-home nursing care each week, on top of the limited hours he is approved for. Even with our family stepping in wherever possible, the financial strain has quickly become overwhelming.

Your support will help with:

1. Additional In-Home Care

He needs daily assistance due to:

  • Major bowel-resection surgery

  • Feeding tube

  • Congestive heart failure

  • One functioning kidney

  • Loss of esophageal motility

  • Repeated endoscopies for ulcers

  • Physical and speech therapy needs

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm

  • And other age-related complications

Even with insurance, the uncovered hours, copays, and care costs are financially crippling.

2. A Wheelchair-Accessible Van

He now requires safe, reliable transportation to his medical appointments and therapies.

3. Critical Home Repairs for Safety

His home must be modified for accessibility and safety due to his limited mobility.

4. An Urgent Roof Replacement

Their home insurance provider has warned that they will lose coverage unless the roof is replaced to meet new requirements—an expense we cannot postpone.

For the past 20 years, my father has devoted his life to ensuring that my grandparents were safe, supported, and cared for. During his hospital stay, my father and grandmother drove two hours each way, every day, just to be with him. Our family has done everything possible—financially, emotionally, and physically—but we are now facing needs that are beyond what we can sustain alone.

We are seeking $100,000 to ensure he can:

  • Remain in the home he loves

  • Receive the level of care he truly needs

  • Live the remainder of his life with dignity, comfort, and independence

  • And ensure my grandmother is not left in financial crisis when he passes

Any support—whether through a donation or a share—means more to our family than words can express.

Thank you for helping us honor a man who has spent more than a century giving everything to others. Your generosity will make an immediate and life-changing difference for him, and for the family who loves him more than anything.
