I am starting a fundraiser for my amazing Superman(Memphis) to get a sidekick (service dog).Memphis a former 26-weeker, who spent over 100 days in the NICU fighting for his life. He fought by himself nonetheless. (Memphis was in foster care at that point and they did not allow visitors) Luckily he had two amazing full-time nurses who became his Moms for 100-plus days.
While in the NICU he had a grade 4 brain bleed on the left side and a grade 3 on the right, and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, therefore they placed a VP shunt. He was also a slow eater who aspirated on his spit. Due to that combination, they had to place a G-tube. Memphis almost died multiple times while in the NICU but he never gave up. He broke out of the NICU on November 9th, 2018, and then made his way to our home on February 18th, 2019.
When we got the call about Memphis we were told that he was basically brain dead and to not expect much from him. Despite having multiple seizures a year, 2 shunt revisions, battling cortical vision impairment as well as optic nerve damage, 7 hospitalizations, over 100 doctor appointments AND finding out he does not have Corpus Callosum. Memphis has proved everyone wrong.
Memphis is now close to walking, which we were told would never happen, can go up and down stairs, pull to stand, and navigate his environment by bunny hopping/crawling around. Memphis is almost talking in 3-word sentences and can also identify all important people to him. He has started safely swallowing 5 ml of thickened liquids a day and nibbling on chips. And Memphis’s team wants to help him increase his independence and keep improving. To increase Memphis’s independence and keep him safe his team has suggested a service dog.
We are going through an amazing organization called Doggie Does Good. Once we have 8,000 the training for his dog can start. Then once the dog graduates, about 12-16 months, the rest is due. The total estimated funds for the dog is 23,000. I want what is best for Memphis and what is best for Memphis is having a service dog. Anything you can give would be appreciated, and if you can not give please share. Thank you for your time and consideration, it is greatly appreciated. (Anything given over the estimated amount will be donated to Doggie Does Good.)
