What started as a toothache and cheek pain of Summer in December 22, 2021 turned out to be a Cancer diagnosis on January 13, 2022, parameningeal Rhabdomyosarcoma. The whole body MRI result on February 3, confirmed her parents’ worst nightmare - the cancer has spread to the bones, spine and other parts which made it Stage 4. The tumor has grown significantly and wrapped around essential nerves and bone in a matter of weeks and has reached the brain making it inoperable.
While most families were celebrating the holidays, Summer was in and out of the hospital, enduring procedures, scans and lab tests to figure out what’s wrong. Apart from the pain, the tumor made it difficult for her to eat which eventually led her to get a feeding tube inserted to help her nutritionally. She also lost her vision in the right eye and limited the functions of the right side of her face. For those who know her or watched her videos in Tasty Treats by Summer, she’s a ball of energy and seeing her confined to a bed/wheelchair is difficult not only for her but for the people who love her too.
The sweet, smart and talented little girl is now fighting for her life. Her parents were scared to tell her the truth but she has shown more maturity than any 8 year old they know. She had to endure 3 procedures and poked by numerous needles in a span of 4 weeks but she has shown courage and strength through it all.
The disease has turned their world upside down. It is mentally, physically, emotionally and financially draining. We all know how expensive medical care can be especially in a different country that offer treatments such as proton therapy for pediatric cancer not available in their home country. Her journey has just begun and the weekly chemo treatment, lab tests and monthly hospital admissions with possible blood transfusions will be her new normal for 50 weeks.
Faith and hope are the things that keep Summer going even through the pain. Please help Summer and her family continue the fight through prayers for complete healing and any help that you can extend to ease their financial burden.
Please help our friend’s family and daughter get through this challenging time. Thank you for your love and support.
