Help Save the life of Suhas Nair

Donation protected
Please meet Suhas Nair, my 27-year old cousin, who is currently fighting for his life in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India.

Two weeks ago, Suhas has developed Acute Pancreatitis, which exacerbated his kidney and liver functioning. Simultaneously, he developed a rare blood disorder called “Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP),” and suffered from excessive fluid build-up around his lungs, due to which he is currently on a ventilator. Since then, he has been treated with "Plasma Pheresis" while seeking artificial respiration/ breathing using a ventilator. Presently, he has been administered at least 5 rounds of Plasma Pheresis, an aggressive treatment in which the liquid part of the blood/ plasma is separated from the blood cells to replace the plasma that contains antibodies that attack the immune system.

As a family, we are grateful for the doctors and medical professionals at Apollo Hospital who are caring for Suhas in this critical stage. However, the plain and simple facts are that the accruing medical costs for his treatments are beyond what Suhas’s parents and immediate family members can afford.

Thus, Suhas’s family is requesting urgent financial help in the form of donations to contribute towards his medical expenses.

Your donations will be used to pay for his hospital bills that include his medications, hospital equipment charges and doctor’s fee. I would like to give an example of the bill that has been issued thus far: A medical bill of Rs. 10 Lakhs has (~ 14,500 USD) was incurred solely for medications for 8 days between 20th to -27th April, 2019. The doctor’s charges and additional medical expenses such as CT scans etc., are yet to be included in the bill. We have worked towards paying part of the bills and will continue to do so; however, the financial resources are scarce at this time as the projected date of discharge is unknown due to his critical health. It is highly likely that he will be there for at least 30 days with additional on-going medical follow-ups for a minimum of 6 months. Failure to pay the medical bills on time, have already resulted in brief halts of administering medicine, which is detrimental to his life. Thus, the need for your financial support is immediate and urgent. We are requesting each and every one of you for any possible contribution that you can make at this time, as the donations will be used on an on-going basis to pay medical bills.

As you consider donating to this fund and helping Suhas, I want to share with you a little more about him. Suhas is the only child to his parents, Suresh and Sujata Nair. As a family, they have had to deal with financial hardships since his childhood. As a young man, Suhas had dealt with on-going health problems, yet he worked very hard to care for his health. For example, he lived a life restricting his food choices to a strict healthy diet . He never used alcohol and drugs, and has ensured to live a life caring for himself and his family, while being cognizant of family’s sparse financial resources. Suhas aspired to become a Civil Engineer, worked diligently, and graduated with his Bachelor’s of Engineering (B.E.) in Civil Engineering in 2012 from SA Engineering College (Chennai). In order to support his family financially, he started teaching at the same college as a part-time/ adjunct instructor, while pursuing his Masters of Engineering in Structural Engineering at Prathyusha Engineering College in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. Currently, he has one semester left to graduate with his M.E.; however, his current health condition poses a risk to completing his studies and his ambition. If given the chance to live, I am sure he will continue to fight to emerge strong and get back on his own feet.

I do hope that you feel inclined to donate to supporting his medical expenses, and most importantly to keep the hope alive for Suhas, his parents and his family. In my opinion, a young adult must not be deprived of treatment and access to medical care due to lack of resources. We will appreciate your donation with heartfelt gratitude, and also request all of you to share this request in your social circles.

With heartfelt gratitude and humility,

Niyatee, on behalf of Suhas, his parents and his family.
