Dear Friends and Kind-hearted Souls,
My name is Steve Whiting, and I am urgently reaching out on behalf of our dear friend, Sue Meighan. Sue is an senior who not only has to manage a disability but is also now facing the imminent risk of becoming homeless by the end of October. She lives on a fixed income of just $1,390 a month through the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)—an amount that barely covers her essential living expenses.
The Threat of Homelessness
Sue's current housing crisis is particularly severe. Her landlord is requiring her to vacate her basement apartment, citing reasons that are less than transparent. Despite her exhaustive search, she has yet to find an affordable housing option where her ODSP is accepted, and where her pet cat is also welcome. Every passing day brings her closer to the grim reality of homelessness.
Food Insecurity and Health
Food has been another struggle for Sue. She's forced to rely on local food banks, where the food quality is often poor and nutritionally deficient. Her health is in decline, exacerbated by a diet lacking in essential nutrients, further making her vulnerable to illnesses.
The Challenge of Employment
Employment opportunities for Sue are painfully limited. With a disability and at her age, she has faced nothing but closed doors even after turning to employment agencies, including specialists who are supposed to assist individuals like her. The dearth of suitable job options is severely hampering her ability to improve her situation.
The Emotional Toll
Above all, the emotional strain Sue is undergoing is immeasurable. She's on the brink of losing her home, her health is deteriorating, and despite her best efforts, she hasn't been able to find a job. She is in desperate need of a safety net, something that only community support can provide at this point.
What We Need
We aim to raise $6,000 to:
- Secure Sue's first and last months' rent for a more sustainable living situation.
- Cover the costs of moving, including a pet-friendly deposit.
- Provide Sue with high-quality food and essential daily living supplies.
