Hi everyone,
BEFORE I BEGIN, PLEASE NOTE THAT MY MOM DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS. PLEASE KEEP IT A SECRET!!!
I have created a go fund me page for my mom, Susan (Sue) Jackson. As some of you may know, my mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in the Fall of 2019.
My mom had to start chemo right away starting in October 2019 and did so for 4 cycles (until January 2020). The CT scan from that month indicated that the chemo was working, at that the big part of her cancer had shrunk in her lymph nodes. There are, however, tiny spots in both lungs that are also cancerous, which means it had already spread; therefore, her cancer is not curable, but can be controlled.
My mom was advised by her oncologist that she could take a break from chemo treatments, given that the cancer shrunk down to a level he was comfortable with.
My mom had another CT scan in early April 2020 and it showed that her cancer was unchanged and had not grown back so she was able to continue her break from chemo treatments. Another CT scan was scheduled again 3 months after (June 2020) and unfortunately was not the news we were hoping for. My mom was experiencing various symptoms such as chest pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and sodium level issues and she ended up being in and out of hospitals most of June. We recently found out that her lung cancer has returned in her lungs and has now spread to her liver and brain.
My mom has just finished her first cycle of chemo treatment in hopes to push the cancer back again. Once we know if it worked, radiation will likely follow at some point in the future.
All of this to say, my mom is a fighter and a strong woman. Although there is no cure, she will be with us as long as she can! Money has been tight as there are several cancer drugs required and they are quite expensive (one chemo drug costs $800 for 3 days of pills!). As most of you know, my mom was a hairdresser for many years and then worked at the Royal Ottawa Hospital but was considered a part time worker and did not have access to medical/sick/disability benefits so it is all out of pocket. She had no choice but to retire early as she will no longer be able to return to work.
My mom is very proud and would NEVER consider this, but I thought I could reach out and try to see if I could raise funds for her. I’m assisting where possible, but I would love nothing more than to surprise her one day in the near future with funds collected to ease her financial burden and relieve her stress with everything else she has already going on.
For any contribution provided, we would be truly grateful and I know it would touch her heart dearly.
To my family, friends and colleagues, I appreciate your kind words and support during this challenging time. It means a lot!!!
Thank you all!
Melissa Jackson
