Hi, my name is Katie Loeffler. I am fundraising to help my aunt and Godmother, Sue Loeffler, afford the medication she needs to continue to fight her liver disease, which has caused her to develop Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE).

In April of 2017, my aunt discovered she had stage 4 Liver Disease during a routine gall bladder removal procedure. This diagnosis came as a complete shock to us, as Sue has never been a big drinker nor has she had any Liver issues prior to this discovery. Over the last five years, Sue has been to several doctors and on several medications for treatment and to slow the progression of the Liver Disease. Recently her memory has taken a turn, and Sue has trouble carrying out tasks in her day-to-day life. At her most recent doctor's appointment, we found out that because Sue's liver cannot function correctly, there is an excess of Ammonia in her blood. This Ammonia build-up in her blood has caused her to develop HE, causing issues remembering things and carrying out everyday tasks. Her doctor has informed us that in order for Sue to make progress, there are two medications she must be on for a minimum of three months. Insurance does not cover the cost of these medications, and it will cost Sue over a thousand dollars each month that she has to be on them. While Sue is currently on the transplant list, she scores a 6 on the MELD Score and is unlikely to qualify for a transplant any time in the near future unless things take a turn for the worst.
