Hi, I'm Sue, a gay man originally from Uganda who has been living in Edmonton, Alberta. I've recently faced an intense legal battle to avoid deportation from Canada. The purpose of this GoFundMe is to seek support in covering the legal expenses incurred during this trying time.

Uganda is perilous for LGBTQI+ individuals like me due to its harsh anti-homosexuality laws, threatening imprisonment or even death based solely on sexual orientation. Unfortunately, after an unsuccessful refugee process, I faced the terrifying prospect of imminent deportation.

However, a ray of hope emerged when, at the eleventh hour, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada intervened. Through ministerial instructions, I was granted a temporary resident permit and an open work permit for 8 months, preventing my deportation. This fortunate turn of events was possibly influenced by a community of people across Canada who came together to advocate for me to stay in Canada, and I am very grateful for that.

The emotional toll of this ordeal has been excruciating. Physically selling off 95% of my belongings and preparing for an abrupt departure caused immense stress. Mentally, I've been through a torturous process that left me feeling drained and overwhelmed.

Now, I face a legal bill exceeding $9000 which I cannot manage alone. I humbly ask for your support to cover these costs. Additionally, come July, I plan to apply for Permanent Residency on Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds—an expensive process in itself.
