Help Subbie & the Salisbury's

Donation protected
Forty-five years a clerk of the course and as a horse trainer, Graham Salisbury is a recognised and loved character throughout Victorian racing, as an ambassador for the sport alongside his best friend Subzero, the old grey hero of the 1992 Melbourne Cup, Graham has become a state treasure. And the horse only cost him a dollar!

Graham inherited Subzero from the Freedman stable, and for over 25 years they have been together, working as course clerks and, more famously, as messengers of positivity. They have visited schools, hospices and community functions, raising valuable funds for charities and promoting a positive image of horse racing.

They have promoted our sport and enriched people’s lives.

But lately, the Salisbury family has fallen on hard times.
Graham’s daughter Nicole has extensive health issues and is wheelchair-bound with paralysis. Graham, in his seventies, is now fighting cancer. His wife Anita is holding down the fort. Current chemotherapy makes it impossible for Graham to work, with Anita tending their four horses between shuttling he and Nicole to and from appointments.

This week alone, Graham has struggled with his chemo and has been hospitalized with an infection. As they struggle, Graham is most upset at being unable to continue his great and positive work in the community with Subzero. At 30 years old, the horse’s legacy is immense – ‘Subbie’ has showcased the kind and affable nature of the thoroughbred, and allowed people to really touch the racing industry.

The Salisbury family has done so much for our industry and they are struggling. Unable to work, caring for both themselves and their horses is worrying, stressful and financially draining.

They are the last people to ask for help, which is why the industry they have served so well for so long now needs to rally around them to give back.

I am hoping we can give this family a break, in both the literal and figurative sense. We can ease their short-term financial concerns by raising enough funds that they can pay some bills or get away for a well-earned break.

The Salisbury family appreciates so much the care and compassion they have received since the news of Graham’s illness. They deserve our help.
