Help Students Read and Succeed

Imagine not being able to read. Imagine how small your world would be.
Many students across the U.S. are relegated to that small world. Unable to read and comprehend, they lack the foundation of successful learning and living.
You can help change those students' lives by donating today to the Read On! pilot program.
Read On! is a free interactive online reading program for low-income elementary school students. It fosters the love of reading — and boosts reading skills — among those who are struggling academically, especially during COVID-19 school closures.
To offer Read On! without charge, we must cover necessary operating expenses, which are listed below. Your donation will help pay the operating expenses of our pilot program, slated to launch by January 2021.
Why the Need Now?
Many teachers say they're not able to meet the needs of individual students in virtual classes during the pandemic. Affluent parents fill this gap by hiring tutors, but lower-income families don't have that luxury. That's where Read On! comes in. We offer free individualized reading experiences that give low-income students the opportunity to learn and succeed.
How It Works
Read On! features one-on-one online sessions between an adult volunteer and a student. After an introduction to the child's parent/guardian, the volunteer establishes a relationship with the student through ice-breaking conversations, such as asking about the child's favorite hobbies, foods or pets.
Then the volunteer shares a book and reads it to the student via online reading programs we've selected for their high-quality content and presentation. When the student becomes more proficient in reading, the volunteer not only shares a book but also helps the child learn by building key reading skills.
Where Will Your Donation Go?
To establish a partnership for our pilot program, we're contacting libraries in the San Francisco Bay Area, Central Oregon and Long Beach, Calif.
Low-income families often use libraries to find reading help for their children, and libraries are looking for new online ways to help those families during the pandemic and beyond. But libraries often don't have funding to cover the essential expenses of a free program such as ours.
Your donation will help pay for these and other operating expenses of the Read On! pilot program:
·     Recruit 25 volunteers.
·     Conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure online security.
·     Cover the cost of an online reading program subscription for each volunteer.
Our pilot program will operate for six months. During that time, we will also apply for nonprofit status and seek funding from organizations that specialize in educational grants.
For the pilot program, your donation of $10 will pay for an online reading program subscription for one month. Your donation of $100 will cover the cost of background checks for five volunteers.
We are enormously grateful for any amount you can contribute. Please donate now.
Why Fund Reading?
Today's educational spotlight is on STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), all laudable disciplines. But many high school science and math teachers find their students are struggling due to a lack of basic reading skills.
By donating to Read On!, you're not only helping low-income students learn to read, but you're also contributing to their success in higher education and in their chosen careers. There is no better – or easier – way to help students reach their full potential.
