Help students in East Oakland play sports!

Greetings Oakland Community,
My name is Emilio Navarro-Perez. I am currently a physical education teacher at a small TK-8 charter school in East Oakland called Aspire ERES Academy. This year I have set out to start a soccer program in this small Oakland community for the first time in the school's history.

Oaktown FC's mission is to mentor, develop, and empower low-income student athletes of color in Oakland through culturally sensitive coaching, giving them opportunity to elite quality coaching, and not letting financial hardship impede on their pursuit to further develop their athletic ability and skills. What makes Oaktown FC different from other soccer clubs is the fact that we are community based and we hold student athletes accountable regarding their academic work in school to help further assist in developing their character and leadership abilities within their community. Essentially, the mission is to use soccer as the conduit to access, attain, and achieve a college education for low-income students athletes of color, while also bringing the community closer together. Ultimately, I have seen many talented and gifted athletes of color from low-income backgrounds not attain a college education for various reasons but have the athletic potential to be playing soccer at a college level. Oaktown FC's purpose is to prevent that from happening and instead, assist athletes to use their talents and ability to their advantage and not only attend college but actually finish college and hopefully reinvest and give back to their community.

More information about Aspire ERES academy: ninety-nine percent of the students qualify for free lunch, they are a title 1 school, and their building is one of the lowest rates facilities in Oakland (which is why we cannot have safe and legitimate practice on campus). The school experiences unique and persistent challenges providing their students with high quality academic instruction, as well as engaging physical activities. The students at ERES are resilient, compassionate, motivated, and thoughtful young people that are truly deserving of this opportunity. I am certain that with the support of the friends, families, allies of Oaktown FC and ERES Academy, we will be able to turn this dream of launching Oaktown FC within the ERES community (their first school soccer team ever) into a reality. Myself, along with a few dedicated friends will be volunteering our time to coach the team. However, we still need a lot of help funding the rest of the operation.

What your donations will help fund?
-Uniforms
-Practice Equipment (balls, bibs, pop-up goals)
-League Registration (for two teams, 1 elementary school team and 1 middle school team)
-Field Rental Fees (for Practice)

My experience as a physical education educator, 10 years of soccer coaching experience, as well as a masters degree in kinesiology have prepared me to turn this vision into a reality. Please consider helping us make it happen!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Emilio Navarro-Perez
