Help Students Explore the Capitol!

My students are 7th and 8th graders who are members of an academic team that is geared toward struggling readers. These students work with a team of teachers to overcome a two or three year reading deficit.

Most of my students are ELL students.
We have a large population of students who have been in our country for only a few years. These students are refugees from Burma, who have come here to seek religious freedom. Once the students enter our team they have conversational English, but are still adjusting to the culture and educational language of The United States. They are testing at least two grade levels below 7th grade. Some are reading at a first grade level. They work in a special class called Read 180 to try and bring up their reading level.

These kids spend a good amount of time participating in volunteer work in our local community. They work on beautification projects, raise money for charity, work at local food banks, and participate in a Christmas fundraiser to help the needy.

Many of my students have been living in the United States for less than two years. They have a very limited understanding of our country and its history. Taking them to Washington D.C. offers them the opportunity to understand what it means to be in America and to celebrate all of the freedoms our founding father's fought to earn for us. The students who are not ELL kids are from low economic families and will probably never have the opportunity to visit our Nation's Capital without the trip.

My students will benefit immensely from experiencing this trip to D.C.
The concept of democracy and freedom are very foreign to our Chin Refugee students. This trip brings these ideas to life and helps them achieve success in their social studies curriculum as 8th graders.

This trip also serves to connect our students to each other and their school. Being on a field trip bonds students together. It gives them shared experiences and makes them feel connected to their school and classmates.

Spending time away from home and their parents affords them the opportunity to grow as individuals. Often our students have never stayed in hotels, visited museums, or even left the immediate area where they live. This trip teaches them life skills that will help them find success in their everyday experiences.

These students are working hard to raise the money to pay for this trip. Taking away a bit of the financial burden will help more of the students achieve this goal. These students have been hosting car washes, variouis fundraiser sales, and other activities to help raise the money to pay for this trip. In addition to that, they are completing regular volunteer opportunities in the community. These are great kids who deserve this experience!
