Help Us Get the Word Out
On August 27, 2020, the Government of Ontario announced plans to build a 235-bed correctional facility, later renamed the "Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex” on farmland in Kemptville, Ontario. This announcement was made without any prior notice or consultation with the community. The chosen site was part of the historic Kemptville Agricultural College and is on unceded Algonquin territory.
The land to be paved over is part of our agricultural and farming heritage. This top-down decision will negatively impact plans for the development of the Kemptville campus across the street from the site, as well as the revitalization of downtown Kemptville and the development of our tourism industry. It is not in keeping with North Grenville’s “Green and Growing” vision for the future. The government’s promises of economic benefits have been proven false. Ontario does not need more prisons but instead needs to fix its broken correctional and judicial systems.
Momentum against the proposal is growing. A local grassroots organization, the Coalition Against the Proposed Prison (CAPP), wants to get the facts out to Kemptville and North Grenville residents and let people know how they can speak out against this plan.
Your dollars will help fund a Canada Post mail-out to over 6,400 residences and businesses in Kemptville and the surrounding area and will be used to promote our message using social media ads. If we receive money over our $4,000 target, it will be used for additional social media ads and to help defray our other costs.
Thank you in advance for any amount you're able to donate.
