Memorial Fund for Steven Weir

My beloved brother Steven Weir was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma after just a few months of escalating discomfort in his abdomen. The originating mass was successfully removed with a colectomy in April. However, the two metastatic masses on his liver were inoperable. His prognosis was not good; 3-6 months with no treatment but with chemo, possibly extending that timeframe. We hit a roadblock with insurance coverage for who was billing for the chemo treatment, which caused a delay in starting that. As this was happening, Steve's liver was on a downturn and was 80-90% affected by cancer. His doctor called and advised that he needed to go to the hospital based on his bloodwork. He was administered chemo in the hospital but sent home days later. Liver function continues to decline. Complicating matters is significant lymphedema in his lower extremities, and some kind of neurological issue in his left arm that caused extremely limited motion. The progression of liver failure and these complications has resulted in Steve's extreme fatigue, remaining bedridden and suffering with pain and mental confusion at times. Hospice is now in place.

Steve has always been a caregiver. He has been married to his wife Kimberly for 34 years and has 2 daughters. Their daughter Meaghan and her wife Amber live with them, as does their other daughter Samantha, who is level 3 autistic and requires substantial support. Steve paid all the bills, and simply "took care of everything", so this will have significant impact on their daily lives. Additionally, Steve and Amber are the only drivers in the household.

Life insurance is not significant and will not cover the balance of the mortgage. Losing the chief breadwinner is a scary proposition, and we want to make sure that they have the best chance of staying in their home. We know that the medical bills are coming, and for sure will be significant, and any assistance that can be provided will be surely welcomed.

I haven't even touched on how special Steve is. He is loved by all. He loves to cook, loves his Tampa Bay sports teams, but most of all he loves his family beyond words. He is generous - always baked bread for family, friends, and neighbors, not to mention the exorbitant amount of Christmas cookies every year and the open invitation to holiday dinners. I am honored and blessed to be his sister. To the best of my ability, I simply wish to fulfill his dying wish to me, which was "please help them", which is the reason for this plea.
