Hi, I am Karen and I am fundraising for Steve, husband to my Bestie ( of over 20 years)
This couple means the world to me and to say they have experienced the worst of the worst over the last few years is an understatement. Losing a beloved mother to cancer, a horrific car accident where a young lad lost his life in December 2021 and now Steve losing his leg in December 2022. I am raising money to cover his medical expenses and to finance a prosthetic leg.
The sequence of events in Mozambique -
What started as sores on the heel of his right leg from a suspected non-poisonous snake bite a week prior, quickly turned septic. By Monday 5th December 2022 they had turned gangrenous and they decided to drive 8 hours in the dark to Quelimane Central Hospital, Mozambique. Tuesday 6th December 2022, Steve started antibiotics and a host of treatments.
- Wednesday morning 7th December 2022 gangrene had moved to below the knee.
- Thursday 8th December 2022 they amputated above the knee on his right leg. The doctors couldn't risk a general anaesthetic on him, so the amputation was done with only an epidural. Steve was awake during the whole process.
- Sunday 11th December 22 while recovering from the operation Steve had a coughing fit which ruptured the blood vessels. His leg had to be operated on again and shortened to stop the bleeding.
Thankfully they are both now home with their family in Zimbabwe and Steve is going from strength to strength, getting used to crutches and wheelchair.
What the funds are for is to
- repay the medical expenses whilst in Mozambique,
- a prosthetic leg,
- physiotherapy
- and any future treatment and equipment needed.
