Becca and I are going back to South Dakota (The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation) for our third Learning Camp for Native Dakota children on July 19-25. This is not a VBS but rather an enrichment camp which provides breakfast and lunch, hands-on science class, math games, story time with books, recreation, and singing. I have the role of Science Guy, and Becca is the Art Lady. Most of the kids come from tribal housing, and the reservation as a whole is mostly low-income. We reach out to families who practice traditional Native religion as well as those who have ties to churches. Our goal is to demonstrate that we from the churches (including White people) love and value the Native children.
Each of the ten team members shares in the costs of the project, including food, supplies, housing, and meals. Becca and I are responsible for costs of $1,050 plus airfare of $645. We would love to find friends again this year who can help with those costs. The Learning Camps are a partnership between the Dakota Presbytery of Native churches and the Baltimore Presbytery.
