Help Steve and Kam Get a Safe, Accessible Van

My name is Bill Kerr, and this story is about my brother Steve who is a disabled Air Force veteran and his a beautiful daughter Kameryn (Kam). Kam is wheelchair-bound and fighting through more medical challenges than most of us could ever imagine. They have faced every hardship with courage, faith, and love. But now, they truly need our help.
Meet Steve:
He served our country proudly in the United States Air Force. While deployed to Iraq as a Heavy Equipment Operator he sustained a life-threatening injury. On a convoy mission, his vehicle was hit by an IED. The explosion left him with severe injuries to his neck, back and shoulder. Injuries that eventually led to his medical discharge. He was later diagnosed with PTSD and has had to deal daily with the unseen scars of his time in Iraq. Even through pain and limitation, he has never stopped being a hero, especially to Kam and her older sister Mckayla.
Meet Kam:
Kam is a beautiful 11-year-old girl who is a true fighter and has been from the day of her birth. Born with gene mutation called ALG-1 (currently there are only 80 to 100 known cases in the entire world). In addition to that, she has multiple complex medical conditions including cerebral palsy, profound intellectual disabilities, cortical visual impairment, chronic lung disease, and intractable Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Because of her medical conditions, she has never been able to walk, talk, or care for herself. She depends completely on the loving care of her parents, sister and home service nurses.
Despite all her challenges, her smile lights up the room. She feels safe when her dad lifts her into her van, holds her close, and takes her where she needs to go. But now that simple act of love of lifting her in and out of the car has become nearly impossible.
Their Struggle:
As she’s grown into her preteen years, she now weighs over 70 pounds. Steve, still recovering from service-related injuries, has been lifting her in and out of her wheelchair for years. But his body can’t take it anymore. He’s scheduled for shoulder replacement surgery on February 5th, and once that happens, he physically won’t be able to lift her anymore. The recovery is expected to take 6 months to a year.
To make matters worse, just two weeks ago, their family van was stolen from their home while they were sleeping. When it was finally recovered, it was destroyed inside and the thieves had ripped apart the interior, damaged the engine, and left it unsafe to drive. At the moment, they are in a rental van and are waiting to hear from the collision center and their insurance company to see if their van will be able to be repaired.
Steve, who already carries so much, is now without a safe vehicle, at the exact time his family need it most.
The Hope:
We’ve found a 2013 GMC Savana wheelchair-accessible van that would change everything for Steve and his family. It has a side-entry ramp, making it safe and easy for Kam to stay in her wheelchair while traveling. No more dangerous lifting. No more risk of injury. Just safety, dignity, and peace of mind.
The van costs $46,888 and that’s what this campaign is for.
With your help, we can give Steve and Kam the gift of mobility, safety, and freedom. We can ease his worry, protect his health, and give Kam a better quality of life.
Why It Matters:
Steve has sacrificed so much for our country, now it’s our turn to stand up for him and for his little girl Kam. Every dollar you give brings them one step closer to a life where love isn’t limited by pain or circumstance.
Please consider donating, sharing this page, or spreading the word. Together, we can make sure Steve doesn’t have to fight this battle alone.
Would you also consider praying for Steve and his family. Pray that the Lord will provide for their needs, specifically that they will be able to purchase a handicap accessible van. Pray for Steve’s surgery and recovery. Pray for Kam as she fights every day. Pray for Mckayla (13) as she will be helping to take care of not only her little sister but her dad as he recovers. Finally, pray that the Lord will bless this family and that they will feel the love of Jesus through this campaign.
Thank you for your consideration, compassion, prayers, and generosity.
