I'm starting this for my amazing, clever, funny and compassionate son, Stephen.

Stephen is 26 years old and is 6'3 and fully bearded, but you'll never find a sweeter soul. On February 12, Stephen was getting ready to go to work at 7-11 where he is  loved by the community and his coworkers. That day, he collapsed onto the kitchen floor and was disoriented and dizzy. He'd been sick for a few weeks and had finally made an appointment the day before but they didn't have an opening until the 22nd. His body couldn't wait.
He was rushed to the ER where he had to go in alone because of covid restrictions. My sweet baby boy, after waiting hours, got the verdict while he was there all alone with no family beside him. Leukemia.

They called and bent the rules to allow me to sit in the ER with him while they gave him blood and fluids and prepped a room for him on the oncology floor. His face crumpled and his whole mouth quivered as he spoke that hateful word to me. Leukemia. The world went airless and sideways and the bottom dropped out of my stomach.

They got him a room and got him ready to go. I wasn't allowed up. He cried like I hadn't seen since he was small. I cried with him. My big 6'3 young man with his feet hanging off the end of the gurney somehow managed to look so small and pale and scared. And I couldn't be there.

They have since bent the rules a little so that I'm blessed enough to be allowed one day a week with him. He is struggling through chemotherapy and scared and really wanting to come home. He will be in the hospital at least a month to six weeks as he recovers. He was diagnosed with AML inv16 which has a really good prognosis.

But really good is still really scary.

He's literally fighting for his life and needs to be able to focus solely on that, but he will be without a job and healing for a long time. I'm asking for help so that he can focus on healing and getting better and not on how he's going to pay this bill or that one.

Please share, donate, pray whatever you can do. Thank you so much, I will update with news of his progress.

His chemo is a 7 day one and the last day is Friday. He's feeling very weak and sad. I talk to him on the phone every day to try and keep his spirits up. I'm hoping that once the chemo is done, he'll start feeling better and will see the progress and his mood and hope will grow.

Thank you so much.

From his very scared mom,

Doni
