Help Stephanie Mondy recover from brain surgery
My name is Stephanie Mondy and I’m a 31 year old nurse who is about to undergo a craniotomy for arteriovenous malformation (AVM) removal. I’ve come to terms with the surgery, but am very nervous about how I will recover- physically, mentally, and financially.
My story starts Oct 2020, I had plans for weight loss surgery and was super excited to start my physical transformation. Everything went very well. The surgery itself and the recovery were textbook. I had hope that the future would be nothing short of amazing. A few weeks later- my very supportive fiancé proposed and I was even more excited! We even planned on getting a 4th dog (husky) together as a joint Christmas present. We were able to pick her up the last week in Oct.
I was out of work for 1 month, but it was planned and we were ready for it.
Soon, we found out that James (my fiancé) would require open heart surgery for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which was scheduled for Nov 10th. His recovery was much more involved but he pulled through and is feeling much better. He was out of work for a month for his surgery.
By mid December, I had had a headache for about 3 weeks, but wasn’t too concerned as I had recent WLS and thought I was dehydrated. My coworkers pushed me togo get imaging to give myself piece of mind. CT scan came back and showed an area that was not filling properly with blood. They decided I needed an MRI. This showed the AVM. After the nuero interventionalist spoke to me about it, we planned the next step would be a cerebral angiogram. Just before Christmas I went in for this procedure. I saw all the blood flow in my brain and the doctor showed me the AVM in detail. He recommended I speak to a neurosurgeon who specializes in AVMs and aneurisms and this apt was set up for Jan.
Just after Christmas, my fiancé who just had open heart surgery caught COVID-19. I was extremely worried his case would not go well due to his weakened immune system. Everything turned out okay, although of course he and I were both out of work again due to infection and exposure.
Before we knew it, it was time for my neurosurgery appointment. After all the options were thoroughly discussed, it was determined that the craniotomy would be my best option for treatment. If this were to be left untreated, the chances of having a hemorrhage increase every year.
Surgery is scheduled for the end of Feb. I will be out of work again for about 6-8 weeks and have no PTO left due to the previous surgeries and covid.
I have so many financial concerns for the rest of the year that I am asking for help. I’m not sure how we’ll get through without my paycheck for potentially 2 months. How will we take care of my mother in law- who lives with us and is disabled, planning a Wedding which is scheduled for December of 2021, feeding 4 dogs and ourselves?
I am asking for any and all help you are willing to give. I will be grateful for anything anyone is willing to give us to help through this tough time.
