Help Stefan Gascho Beat Cancer!
Donation protected
I started this fundraiser on YouCaring. What follows is my original post from April 2017:
Many of you have been asking how you can help Stefan in his continuing battle with cancer. Our hope is to help relieve some of the financial burden on him, his wife and their children during this stressful time, so that he may focus on getting well and not on how he will afford his next surgery. Stefan does not want to ask for help....he is the one who is usually helping everyone else. But after the last 18 months, the medical bills have accumulated, along with expenses from a new baby, a mortgage, a daughter in college and another at home. The financial burden is real, and they need our help.
In November of 2015, Stefan and his wife learned they were expecting. They were so happy! Just two weeks later, Stefan discovered a tumor on his leg….then the sarcoma spread to his lungs. Radiation followed, then surgery on his leg, then surgery to remove part of his lung, then 18 weeks of chemotherapy....a long, difficult year. The birth of their son was a light in the darkness!
In March of this year, we learned that the cancer has returned to Stefan's lungs. This month, he will have yet another painful and expensive surgery to remove more of his right lung, and in May will likely have another surgery to remove tumor from his left lung. Recovery from lung surgery is intense. The chemotherapy has left his heart weakened, so nothing is certain and everything is risky. There is the possibility of DNA-targeted therapy once surgeries are complete. We are holding on to hope!
Except for a brief stint in January, Stefan has not worked in over a year. The financial stress is tangible. The additional hospitalizations and new treatments are bringing more financial worries to Stefan and his family as they have to manage more co-insurance and co-pays on top of the everyday expenses of owning a home and raising children. They are not comfortable asking for help. Therefore, we are asking you, on their behalf, to help alleviate some of this financial stress. Stefan will then be able to focus on beating this cancer, knowing they have the support of wonderful people such as yourself to help cover costs, including the $4,000 co-pay for this next surgery.
Thank you for coming together to help our beloved brother, friend and colleague.
