11 years ago, aged 35 years old, my ex husband and sons father Stef, suffered a severe stroke.
When Stef first woke up, all he could do was blink his eyes.
Stef has come a long way since then, but he is isolated in a care home in Scotland where he spends his days alone watching movies. During Covid he went 3 years with no visits.
Me and his son live in England. It’s taken years, but finally the social services have agreed that Stef can move from Scotland to care home in Surrey to be close to us!
BUT!
he has to cover the courier and specialist travel costs himself.
Stef started a Go Fund Me last year and has struggled to promote. No one who knew him when he had stroke stayed in touch.
Stef needs a hoist to be moved from his wheelchair. Is non verbal, communicating through a laptop, and is a choke risk needing fluids to be thickened.
For these reasons, the safest way to move Stef from Scotland to England will be via a private ambulance service with medically trained staff.
It’s going to take 9hrs and whichever service we use they will need to add to that to cover their time to and from. As you can imagine, these don’t come cheap.
Stef was only 35, when he had his stroke, with no savings, he has no way of covering these costs.
Initial quotes are coming in at £4000. I’m confident that we can get it under £4000 including courier costs.
Stef has spent the last 11 years alone in a room wasting away. He gets no physiotherapy and can no longer bear his own weight. The care home that we are looking at has an in-house physiotherapist and I would be working with Stef personally on improving his strength and mobility again, as well as just enjoying getting visits! Going out places and building a relationship with his son again.
Please help me raise the money to ensure he has a better life, where he gets the opportunity to “live” his life and not waste away in a room.
