Not every dog can be safely rehomed. For dogs with complex behavioural needs, trauma, legal restrictions, big personalities or bite histories, the available pathways are incredibly limited and sadly often result in euthanasia.

Many dogs considered “complex” are not dangerous dogs. Some are fearful. Some are reactive. Some struggle with confidence, handling, separation anxiety, trauma, overstimulation or simply adapting to life after difficult experiences.

In a rescue environment where time, space and resources are limited, organisations are often faced with incredibly difficult decisions. When there are large numbers of dogs needing help, resources are naturally directed toward those most likely to be rehomed quickly and successfully.

Unfortunately, this can leave some dogs with manageable behavioural challenges facing limited options.

The Canine Advocate Sanctuary (TCAS) was created from a belief that these dogs still deserve the opportunity for safety, stability and a life with purpose. Our aim is provide secure sanctuary, behavioural rehabilitation where possible, and lifelong care when rehoming is not an option.

Traditional dog rescues focus on rehabilitating and rehoming dogs into suitable families. When a dog cannot be safely or easily rehomed due to behavioural factors, rescues often face extremely difficult decisions because their resources must prioritise dogs who can successfully find homes.

Unlike people, who may be supported through rehabilitation, dogs with behavioural difficulties are often euthanised without the same opportunity for assessment and recovery.

The Canine Advocate Sanctuary (TCAS) is a developing organisation centred around supporting the dogs who fall into that gap. We specialise in complex behavioural cases where rehoming may not be possible or safe.

TCAS exists because of three dogs whose struggles, resilience and misunderstood behaviours completely changed the direction of our lives. Their stories opened our eyes to the gaps that can exist for behaviourally complex dogs and inspired us to begin building something different.
