Help Stanley with unexpected medical expenses..

Hi, I’m Dana Garber Kappus and on July 22, 2023, my brother woke up and could not feel or move his legs!

He’s no novice to medical issues. As a baby, he had neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that formed on his spinal cord. The radiation treatments to treat that issue caused the development of severe spinal scoliosis. His back has two curves, a bulge, and a twist. Because of this, he’s had multiple surgeries at Duke and Cone Hospitals, he spent over two years in a hospital bed after spinal and hamstring surgeries. Even with this medical care, he was partially paralyzed from the waist down, but was able to walk with the aid of canes or crutches. Over time, he developed serious heart problems that are inoperable due to the condition of his spine. While he’ll never run a marathon, he was able to get around on his own and be active.

On July 22, 2023, he woke up and could not feel or move anything below the waist. He was completely paralyzed from mid-chest down due to the deterioration of his spine between T-7 and T-8. Now, he is unable to walk or sit up without assistance due to total paralysis from the waist down. He spent 52 days in hospital rehab learning how to function in his new reality, which includes wheelchairs, transfer boards, shower seats, and so many other things to help him live without the use of his legs. He has accepted the reality that he will need some level of home healthcare for the rest of his life.

As you can imagine, health insurance doesn’t cover everything and on top of normal expenses- food, gas, bills, etc…he’s also had to make changes to his home to accommodate his wheelchair and other assistive devices. That’s what this fund is set up for, to pay for in-home healthcare aids and other medical expenses that may arise. No donation is too small. We appreciate any amount of generosity. It will all help!
