On a day in March that was as normal as you can have during a pandemic, Stacey Nooney collapsed while walking her dog, overcome by a seizure that lasted for more than 5 minutes.
It came out of the blue, never having happened before. Stacey hadn't been feeling poorly and had no known underlying illness. In the emergency room she was stabilized and seen by the ER doctors, none of whom could explain what had happened.
The next three months were filled with doctors' visits and progressively worsening symptoms. Stacey finally found a doctor of functional medicine who diagnosed her with Lyme Disease and tick-borne illness.
Living in Columbia County, New York, it is common to be tested for Lyme whenever an odd assortment of symptoms surface. In fact, Stacey had been tested for Lyme three months prior to her diagnosis with negative results.
It was a surprise to receive the diagnosis, but even more of a surprise to find out that her medical treatments for Lyme were not covered by insurance because they are considered "alternative treatments."
After months of megadoses of antibiotics and a regimen of herbal remedies, Stacey’s condition had not significantly improved. During the summer and fall, Stacey developed more Lyme-associated illnesses, including chronic inflammatory response syndrome, chemical toxicity, and other ancillary co-infections.
The treatments that Stacey continues to need are extremely expensive. She needs weekly visits with her doctor. She and her family have paid for everything until now out of pocket with no definitive end in sight.
Her illness and resulting expenses have devastated Stacey and her family, emotionally as well as financially. Stacey is unable to care for her family nor even to be a part of her children's and husband's every day lives. She has had to remain isolated from them for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
