What is happening in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is currently undergoing the worst economic crisis since its independence. Prices of essential commodities and services have sky-rocketed compared to local income.  There are shortages in food, gas, medical supplies for critical surgeries, and 6-13 hour daily power cuts. Sadly, several individuals have already perished waiting in huge lines for these basic resources under the extreme heat.  Since March, there have been mass peaceful protests in the streets, calling for an end to the misuse of public resources and mismanagement of the country’s economy. Despite the people's will, change is slow to arrive and is taking a heavy toll on those who were already below the poverty line.

Who are those most at risk?

Those families already in poor financial standing have found themselves in a dire situation. Many households face the need to share a single meal among their entire family per day. Parents, unable to source essential nutrition for their children, are struggling to keep their infants from starvation. Medical supply shortages have also been reported from doctors around the island, who have called for donations of essential medical equipment such as ET tubes and medicine, and have been reluctantly forced to share personal critical-care equipment across patients; a dangerous, yet unavoidable reality of the current situation.

 

How you can help save lives!

This fundraiser will enable a coalition of two local charity organizations Pahura (Pahura Facebook Page) and Help Sri Lanka Foundation (Help Sri Lanka Foundation Facebook page ), to provide critical food rations and aid to those families who are barely scraping together a single meal for the day. With your generous donation to this fundraiser, you will be helping a starving family by ensuring they and their children receive the daily rations they need to survive this crisis.

 

Our target is to help 500 families from the parts of Sri Lanka that have been hardest affected by this economic crisis. We estimate that with just $40 (13,225.40 LKR at the time of writing), we should be able to provide a month's worth of sustenance to a single family. Accordingly, we hope to raise $20,000 towards this cause.
