Help Sri Lankan Street Dogs

Hello Family and Friends.
As many of you know already. I’m a Registered Veterinary Nurse. And I love all things dogs and animals.

I visited Sri Lanka on holiday in November 2024.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island country in South Asia. It has an estimated 3 Million stray/street dogs.

On my holiday I visted the WeCare Veterinary Hospital and saw first hand the amazing work that they do for so many Sri Lankan street Dogs with so little money

A little bit about WeCare:

WECare Worldwide is a veterinary charity, founded in 2014 by Dr Janey Lowes. They provide care to street dogs in Sri Lanka, primarily focusing on neutering, vaccinations, and treatment of sick and injured animals. They also run education programs to improve community awareness of animal welfare.

WECare is entirely funded by donations and relies heavily on volunteers to support their operations.

WeCare runs an Outreach programme CNVR. Catch Neuter Vaccinate and Realease in local communitys where there main aim is to reduce the stray dog population.

In any population, a certain percentage of those will be sick or injured so by reducing the population numbers, we will not only be preventing unwanted puppies being born on the street, we will also be reducing the number of animals who are suffering and in need of veterinary care.
WeCare regularly host outreach programmes in the local community for both street and owned dogs.

With an estimated 1-3 million roaming dogs already in Sri Lanka, every sterilisation counts. Un-neutered female street dogs inevitably spend their whole lives either pregnant or rearing pups, which is stressful with limited food resources. Preventing unwanted pregnancies reduces the amount of puppies born – or dumped – on the street. Over half of these puppies won’t make it to six months of age, succumbing to infectious diseases like distemper or parvovirus, or being involved in road traffic accidents. They often lead a short and painful existence...

WeCare CVNR programme moves around Sri Lanka to the most rural villages every two weeks. So that they can vaccinate and neuter the most rural dog populations. It also allows education for the local community.

On July 14th. I will be flying to Sri Lanka And volunteering with WeCare for 7 weeks at WeCare CVNR programme.

This is entirely self funded by myself and I will be volunteering from 16th July to 26th August 2025

Helping this charity and programe is the reason why I got into Veterinary in the first place.

Any donation will be gratefully received by WeCare. There charity is linked.

I will be keeping everyone updated about how many dogs we neuter snd vaccinate whilst i am volunteering with the program.
