Help sponsor a speech boot camp for Tom Warmbrodt

Donation protected
Our dear friend Tom Warmbrodt has spent the last year recovering from the massive hemorrhagic stroke he suffered on February 26th, 2020. As a result of Tom’s stroke, he has right side mobility issues and a communication disorder called aphasia. Aphasia results from damage to portions of the brain that are responsible for language; in Tom’s case, his aphasia is “mixed,” meaning that both his expressive and receptive speech are affected.

With the most fervent hope and goal of giving Tom as many opportunities as possible to improve his communication, Tom and Julie are pursuing additional speech and cognitive therapies through Austin Speech Labs . At the end of 2020, Tom, Julie (Tom’s wife), and their two youngest daughters, Kate and Olivia, moved from Fredericksburg back to Austin, Texas to be closer to therapy and medical options for Tom and to be closer to family as their needs continue to evolve. Currently, Julie is home schooling Kate and Olivia and is full-time caregiver for Tom.

Austin Speech Labs  is a phenomenal resource for the Warmbrodts, as well as many other families across Texas and beyond who face the very difficult challenges associated with aphasia. ASL  offers speech and cognitive therapy boot camps, 5 sessions per year, 6-8 weeks in length. Tom is also receiving physical, occupational, and speech therapy through at home health for the time being, but these additional speech boot camps are not covered by insurance. Tom attended the last bootcamp of 2020 with great success and is midway through the first session of 2021. The skills he is able to gain through this additional speech therapy allow Tom to regain independence and foster the ability to express himself, in both verbal and written formats. We hope to help the Warmbrodt family fund all 5 boot camps for the coming year, and any funds that exceed that goal will be used towards boot camps in 2022 or other therapy that is recommended for Tom’s recovery.

From the bottom of our hearts and from the Warmbrodt family’s hearts, thank you all so much for your love, prayers, and continued support. If you are not able to donate financially (as we know it has been tough times for many people this past year), we humbly ask for your continued prayers and ongoing encouragement. Alternately, please consider sending or dropping off a meal via Meal Train  . We have had many people asking how they can help all these months since Covid has forced everyone into isolation, and we all continue to be humbled by the outpouring of compassion we’ve witnessed for Tom and the Warmbrodt family this past eleven months. This community has been a Godsend for the Warmbrodt family during this most difficult season.

About Tom
Tom was born and raised in West Texas. He became a software designer in his early 20’s and made his way to Austin. Along the way, he met and married the love of his life, Julie. Together they have three daughters, Indi (22), Kate (12), and Olivia (9). Tom is passionate about coding, cooking, the Astros, and his friends and family. He is witty, compassionate, and generous. We miss hearing his verbose stories and ramblings on everything in life from bacon to baseball.

Tom’s Stroke Story
Tom suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke on February 26th, 2020. Three brain surgeries were performed. The first, that same evening to evacuate the resulting blood clot, and, a second, the following day (February 27th) where neurosurgeons performed a decompressive craniectomy whereby a portion of the skull is removed to allow room for the brain to swell in an effort to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP). After 15 days in the ICU at Dell Seton hospital in Austin, Tom was moved to Texas NeuroRehab in south Austin to begin recovery. A third surgery was performed on June 2nd to replace the bone flap removed during the craniectomy.  Tom returned to the rehab center until his discharge on August 28th, 2020 to return home with his family. Thank God! After six months of nearly complete separation for their family because of Covid-19.

What is Austin Speech Labs ?
Austin Speech Labs  is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing intensive speech, language, and cognitive therapy for stroke survivors as long as they need it. They offer services in three areas to help stroke survivors become more independent and regain their language skills post stroke: 1) Intensive Speech and Language Therapy in office and tele-therapy; 2) Caring for Caregivers Program, and 3) Research to find innovative treatment for stroke survivors to reduce the length of recovery time.

What is a Boot Camp?
The intensive speech and cognitive therapy provided by Austin Speech Labs  is structured in eight-week “Boot Camp” sessions. Clients can come up to five days a week for six hours each day and receive individual, group, music, cognitive and computer-based therapy. (Although, at this time with the pandemic, everything is done virtually.)

The different types of therapy engaged at Austin Speech Labs  all target similar focus areas including reading, writing, auditory processing, automatic speech, memory, cognition, conversation, vocabulary, and language.
